Cycle for Smart Works 2024

For many women, getting a job is a lifeline. It is a chance to escape poverty, gain financial stability and restore confidence. In the shadow of the cost of living crisis, there is an intensified need for the Smart Works service.

Smart Works is a UK charity that dresses and coaches unemployed women for their job interview. They give women the confidence they need to reach their full potential, secure employment and transform their lives. In the last year, 69% got a job within a month of their appointment.

Between 23rd February and 8th March 2024, I will be cycling to raise vital funds for Smart Works. I will be pedalling for a purpose and would appreciate every pound you are able to give to support this brilliant charity.

Pedal Power

Wednesday 28th Feb
First road session done on my new bike! Managed a 10 mile loop from Pannal taking in the beautiful, but hilly, North Yorkshire countryside through Beckwithshaw and Daw Cross before dropping back down to Burn Bridge.

It was just after the drop down into Burn Bridge where I started to lose power and couldn't feel gear changes. Heard a clank and my left pedal fell off into the road - on a flipping hill too!

Bike in for repairs and due back at the weekend so the next few days miles will be done on my husbands bike attached to the turbo trainer in our very messy garage!

Anyway, I took the opportunity to jog the last mile home with the bike in tow as 'brick training' for the triathlon. Trying to make the most of every training opportunity as it feels to coming around very soon!

It was wonderful  to come back to work on Monday to some kind, generous donations - thanks so much Pat, Lois and Tilly! Seeing these motivated me to keep going and on that note - it's on to the garage I go for a quick lunch session!

Two pints of pinot and a sprint triathlon

Friday 23rd Feb
I was out with friends in January and we were discussing how we had lost our fitness when we turned 40 and came to the realisation that now in our mid-forties this had been a topic of conversation with no action for several years.

A few more glasses of pinot in and full of the 'new year, new me' kind of hype, we decided to enter the Harrogate Sprint Triathlon which takes place in April to give us some motivation!

At the point of signing up for the tri, I had the grand total of one bike ride and a couple of holiday pool swims under my belt over the last 5 years and didn't actually own a bike.

So one new (to me) road bike later and I'm about to attempt my first road session this Saturday, thankfully supported by a couple of friends who are a lot more experienced than me. I'll let you know how it goes!

I thought whilst training for the tri, why not raise some money in the process for a great charity. So if you can, please consider giving some money to Smartworks who do amazing work to support women back into the workplace. We've spent one of our charity days with Smartworks in CMT and the work that they do In our community is wonderful.
